Darren grew up in Delran, NJ. While attending Delran High School, Darren finished his high school career by receiving the honors of all county and all-south jersey. He went on to become a 3 Time All- American in Junior College as a high jumper, capping off his JUCO career as a national high jump champion 7 feet 3 inches 1983. Darren went on to be inducted in the Glouster County hall of fame where his school record still stands.
While attending the University of Nebraska Darren was the big 8 champion 1985 and during that same year he was elected team MVP. He was a 3 time All-American while attending Nebraska and at the height of his career was ranked 10th in USA and 40th in world. He still holds the all time best mark in south jersey for the high jump at 7 feet -5 and ¾ inches was translates in metric to 2.28 meters. Darren was an 1984 Olympic trail Qualifier in the high jump and in 1985 earned a spot on World University Games team.
Darren was in the first class of inductees for the Delran high school hall of fame as well as was inducted into the Burlington county hall of fame.
