Brian grew up in Delanco, NJ. In high school he was All-New Jersey (second team) at Holy Cross, two-time All-Burlington County, all-South Jersey, all-league, and was a "Hit Man Award" honoree. Brian had an incredible high school football career helping Holy Cross to a two-year record of 18-4 (.818) and the 2000 state championship. In the 2000 state championship final, Brian had 25 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown to earn defensive player of the game honors. He also earned high school letters in track and field and wrestling.
Brian went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh. In his first active collegiate season, he started all 12 regular-season games at Sam linebacker, finished second on the team with 118 tackles, also compiled seven tackles for losses, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He was honored by The Sporting News as a second team Freshman All-American and the Big East Defensive Freshman of the Year. Brian was also the recipient of Pitt's Ironman Award for his dedication to strength and conditioning and was a Big East All-Academic Football Team honoree.
